Outerwear is the hardest thing to buy online, because it has to fit over whatever you are already wearing. Here is how to get it right the first time — and if you do not, returns are free for 30 days.

Measure a jacket, not yourself

The most reliable method is not a tape measure around your chest. It is this:

Take a jacket you already own and like the fit of.
Lay it flat, buttoned or zipped, with the sleeves out to the side.
Measure across the chest from armpit seam to armpit seam, the shoulder from seam to seam, the sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff, and the body from the base of the collar to the hem.
Write those four numbers down. They are your real size.

Then read how the style is cut

Our product pages tell you how each style is meant to sit, because it varies a lot:

Cut	Which styles	What to do
Tailored	Faux suede blazer	Take your normal size. It is meant to close.
Relaxed / open-front	Open-front blazer, tweed blazer	Take your normal size. There is no closure to strain.
Deliberately oversized	Sherpa zip-up, denim trucker, shacket	Your normal size will already read large. Size up only to wear knitwear underneath.
Plus-size only run	The two plus-size fleeces (1X–5X)	No straight-size run exists for these styles.

Between two sizes?

In outerwear, go up. A jacket that is slightly roomy still works over a sweater; one that is slightly tight does not work at all once the temperature drops.
